Home: More Than Just a Place, It's a Feeling

The recent fires have had me thinking a lot about our emotional attachment to our homes. Regardless if you have lived somewhere for 2 weeks or 20 years there is a sense of serenity and safety when we think about our homes. Home is much more than a location or the place we sleep, it's where many of life’s most precious moments unfold. It’s more than four walls and a roof; it’s a sanctuary of comfort, joy, and peace, a place where we are allowed to be our authentic selves. Wholly messy, raw, unfiltered. The place where our guard comes down and we are allowed to be, to eat, to sleep, and to reflect. And when thoughtfully designed, a home becomes a true reflection of who we are—and thus it becomes a place where we can thrive. At Et Sal Interiors, we believe that the essence of home lies not in its architecture but in the emotions it evokes. So how do you reclaim home when you are displaced, grieving, in a new space, or just unsure how to make it yours? Here are three tips to transform your house into a sanctuary you’re excited to return to every day:

1. Embrace Personalization

Your home should tell YOUR story. Incorporate pieces that hold meaning—family heirlooms, artwork you’ve collected during travels, or photos that evoke cherished memories, or simply things that spark joy. Two years ago I bought a piece of pottery because I loved it. It was not expensive or unique but I thought it was genuinely beautiful. Now weekly I fill it with blooms from the farmers market because it makes me smile when I walk past it. Mixing these with functional elements creates a space that feels authentically yours. Personalization not only brings warmth to your interiors but also makes your space uniquely comforting.

2. Prioritize Comfort with Thoughtful Furnishings

Comfort is the foundation of a peaceful home. Invest in quality furniture that supports relaxation—think a plush sofas and a bed with luxurious linens. Layer textures through rugs, throws, and cushions to add depth and coziness. Lighting also plays a pivotal role; opt for warm, adjustable lighting that can shift from bright and energizing during the day to soft and calming in the evenings.

3. Create Purposeful Spaces

Designate areas in your home for specific activities, ensuring each serves a clear purpose. A cozy reading nook with a comfortable chair and good lighting encourages relaxation for the avid reader, while a well-organized home office fosters productivity. Don’t overlook outdoor spaces—a patio with lush greenery or a small fountain can offer a serene escape.

When you infuse your home with intention and care, it becomes more than a dwelling—it becomes your sanctuary. By prioritizing personal touches, comfort, and purposeful design, you’ll create a space that not only looks beautiful but also nurtures your well-being. After all, the true measure of a home isn’t its size or style; it’s the way it makes you feel every time you walk through the door.
